What are the main motivators for web users to use a second screen experience while browsing ?

Is Browsing internet an activity that allows a second screen (mobile) ? Do you have some example ?

I am not sure if i get what you mean with 'second screen', but if the question is if people would use pc and mobile device simultaneously, then i guess that this is certainly possible in case:

a) the surfing is done on laptop/pc when available while messaging is done on the mobile, definately true for people <20 years

b) the mobile device is used on the side because there is a special app which the user likes

for surfing alone (browser) there is absolutely no need to use two devices....

You can read about "second screen" in at topic page level : "Second Screen: A term that refers to an additional electronic device (e.g. tablet, smartphone) that allows a television audience to interact with the content they are consuming. The shift that occurs when you let go of traditional TV, social television creates a need for interaction between the sender and content consumers."
This mean that what you see on the web, will influence what you can read/do on your mobile at the same time : imagine your mobile phone is showing you the wikipedia page about "second screen" while you are reading my answer ...
