Is social marketing a MUST in China?

What's the level of connection in China and is it a must being "social" while entering this market?
What are the most popular social media over there?

The level of connection depends on the market segment and targeted customers in order to position a product or service in China. This is an approach which can be adapted to any market entry. Social Media Marketing is also very popular in China, so if you find your targeted customers there, you should for sure also be "social".

But what is different to the "western" markets and also has to be highlighted as a market entry barrier, is the media regulation in China. There is a huge list of blocked websites in China, for instance Facebook.
Instead of western social media platforms they have own Chinese services like Renren (人人), Weibo (微薄) and Weixin (微信), instead of Skype most of the Chinese are using QQ. Particularly if you plan to launch a new social media in China this will be an issue.
