Reputation-based social networking will surely add to the marketing fuel but won't be the only denominator.
Cross-media, history and congruence, in best case with a pinch of polarising salt will help entities to have a better chance.
Though I remember times before the now 'known' internet when trickster built up smoke and mirrors with incredible effort and long-standing professional fell for it.
@ crowd - depends on the crowd. If it's mostly buddies then they're useless as they tend to pamper each other.
I like the trust framework approach and how connect.me puts that slowly into practice.
